There are those who would argue that food is just ‘fuel’, and particularly on safari, the onus on gourmet-style meals is an overrated and unnecessary indulgence. I beg to differ.

Yes, although a packed lunch, or padkos consisting of cold left over pizza and crisps absolutely has its place while driving along the roads in a National Park, there is truly something to be said for the surprising feasts some of the private lodges are able to serve up after an exciting game drive.

From the splendour of a hearty breakfast, including fresh fruits, yoghurts, and eggs made to order, to light salads for lunch and a several-course dinner set against the background of a cricket-infested night sky – it all adds to the incredible experience of bush fare at a private lodge.

Romantic evening settings come replete with damask table cloths, parrafin lamps and tailor made service. These are some of my best food and ambiance dinner memories from the last year…
